How to Edit Your Shopify Store With AI Without Breaking It

There are now four ways to get AI to change your Shopify store, and they're good at very different jobs. One redesigns whole pages while you chat to it, one writes your product descriptions, and one will happily write you a custom section in code.

In this guide I'll walk you through all four: what each one is best for, what to watch out for, how to use it and a prompt to try. Everything here happens on a COPY of your theme, so your live theme stays exactly as it is until after Black Friday.

Which tool for which job

Tool Best for Watch out for
Shopify Canvas Redesigning pages with your whole store in view Early access, only themes developed by Shopify or custom themes, no app blocks
Shopify Sidekick Quick theme and admin changes in plain English It edits whichever theme you have open
Shopify Magic Product descriptions, photo backgrounds, a brand new block It can invent claims about your product
Claude or ChatGPT Copy in your voice, custom section code, small fixes Code you can't read, and where your data goes

Before anything else Make your copy

  1. Go to Online Store, click the ... menu next to your live theme, then Duplicate.
  2. It lands in your theme library as "Copy of [your theme name]". You can rename it to whatever you like.
  3. From now on, click Edit theme on the copy. Never on the live one.

Shopify caps your library at 20 themes, so you may need to clear an old one out first.

Shopify Canvas

Canvas launched on 1 October 2026. It shows every page of your store in one big workspace, and you either click something to edit it or tell Sidekick what you want in the chat.

I'll definitely be playing with this one myself! It's brand new and untested though, so I can't speak to results yet. Treat it as a small trial. ๐Ÿ‘€

Can you even use it?

  • It's in early access for certain stores and still rolling out. No Canvas option in your admin means you don't have it yet.
  • Desktop only.
  • Canvas works only with themes developed by Shopify and with custom themes. Third-party themes aren't supported, which rules out a lot of paid themes.
  • Staff accounts need the Edit code permission.

The fine print

  • You can't add or configure app blocks or app embeds in Canvas. Think reviews, bundles, subscriptions. Shopify doesn't say what happens to app blocks already in your theme when you copy it across, hence the break test further down.
  • A theme you edit in Canvas stops receiving theme updates.
  • You can't download the theme files afterwards.
  • You can't add a block by hand. You ask Sidekick for it.
  • There's no save button because changes save automatically, and customers can't see any of it until you publish.

How to use it

  1. Online Store > the ... menu next to your theme > Duplicate in Canvas.
  2. The copy opens in Canvas with a Canvas badge. Your original stays in the theme library, untouched.
  3. Click text to edit it, click a block to change its settings, or type what you want into the Work with Sidekick field.
  4. Gone somewhere you don't love? Click the theme history icon, pick an earlier version in Version history, then Restore.
  5. Leave the Publish button alone.

A prompt to try

Redesign the top section of my home page for [who my customer is]. Keep my logo, colors and fonts. I want one headline about [the main benefit of my product] and one button that goes to [my best-selling collection]. Don't change any other section.

Shopify Sidekick

Sidekick is Shopify's built-in assistant, and you'll find its icon on any page of your admin. Inside the theme editor it can change your global theme settings (colors, typography, spacing), change the settings on any section or block, add sections your theme already includes, and move, hide or remove them. Shopify says it can't change your store without your approval, so it shows you first and you say yes.

Best for: the fiddly little jobs, like rounder buttons everywhere or a slideshow at the top of the home page.

Watch out for:

  • It works on the theme you have open, so open the copy.
  • It only adds sections and blocks your theme already has. For something new, use the Generate button in the next chapter.
  • It can't edit the images in your theme.
  • On an unpublished theme you still have to hit Save.

How to use it: Online Store > Edit theme on your copy > click the section you want changed (optional, but it helps) > open Sidekick and type > review what it suggests > approve > Save.

A prompt to try

On my home page, move the featured collection section so it sits directly under the main banner, and change its heading to "Our best sellers". Don't change anything else.

Shopify Magic

Shopify Magic is the name for the AI tucked into the admin itself. I'd start with these three.

Product descriptions. Go to Products, open a product, and click the magic wand icon in the description toolbar. Type what you want, edit what comes back, then Save. It's desktop only. Shopify's own tip is to give it the product title plus at least two features or keywords.

Product photos. Open an image from your files and click the thumbnail to get the editor. Color background swaps the background for a solid color, Generate changes the scene from a short description, and Crop and transform extends the edges. Generated images carry an invisible watermark that can't be removed (Shopify says it doesn't restrict commercial use).

A brand new block. In the theme editor, click a section, then Add block > Generate. Describe the block in at least five words, click Generate, and hit Keep if you like it. It works with Theme Store themes, though vintage themes and the Starter plan miss out. Shopify Support won't troubleshoot the code it writes, so this one is copy-only until you've tested it properly.

Watch out for: Shopify warns that generated text can include things that don't apply to YOUR product, like care instructions or a guarantee you don't offer. You're responsible for every word you publish, so read it like a customer with a complaint would.

A prompt to try

Write a product description for [product name]. It's for [who buys it and why]. Features: [feature 1], [feature 2], [feature 3]. Tone: [warm and plain / playful / premium]. Under 120 words, in short paragraphs. Only use the facts I've given you. Don't add claims, ingredients or guarantees.

Claude or ChatGPT

Ask it for copy and code. Claude and ChatGPT can do SO much for a Shopify store. This is my pick for product copy that sounds like you (paste in two or three things you've written and ask it to match them), for a custom section, and for small theme fixes. You ask, it writes, and you paste the result into your store. Code goes into Online Store > the ... menu on your COPY > Edit code. If a file goes wrong, the Timeline can restore it to an earlier version, although it can't bring back a deleted file.

The official connectors. Shopify has its own connector for Claude and its own plugin for ChatGPT. You install them from Claude or ChatGPT, on a desktop browser, and you're sent to your Shopify admin to approve what the tool can see and change. According to Shopify, a connected tool can work with your products, collections, inventory and discount codes, and read your orders, customers and analytics. It can change an unpublished theme. It can't edit your live theme, publish a theme or delete one, and it can't touch refunds, payments, taxes or domains.

Watch out for:

  • Once an AI tool has your store data, it's handled under THAT company's terms, and that includes customer and order details.
  • The approval screen shows whether it wants read-only or write access. Read each permission, and decline if it's more than you're comfortable with. You can remove it any time by uninstalling it from your Shopify admin.
  • If you can't read the code, ask for a plain-English explanation of every part before you paste a thing.

A prompt to try

I run a Shopify store on the [theme name] theme. Write me one custom Liquid section: [describe it, for example a three-column "why choose us" row with an icon, a heading and a line of text in each]. Make all the text and colors editable in the theme editor. No external scripts or libraries. Then tell me which file to create, where to paste the code, and what each part does in plain English.

What I'd never let AI touch on a live store

  • The published theme. Any of it.
  • Checkout, payments, shipping rates and tax settings.
  • Prices and discount codes in bulk (one wrong decimal across 80 products is a very bad morning).
  • The app blocks and embeds that make you money: reviews, subscriptions, bundles, upsells, and your tracking pixels.
  • Product claims. Ingredients, sizing, safety, care instructions, guarantees and returns wording get written or checked by a human.
  • Anything that sends to customers without you reading it first.
