First Do you have Rollouts?
A rollout is a set of changes to your store that you schedule for a date and time.
Event
Publishes your changes for a set period, then rolls them back when it ends. Use it for a sale with an end date.
Launch
Makes your changes permanent at the time you set. They can't be reverted once the rollout ends, so use it for a new look or a new product range that's staying.
Experiment
Shows the change to some of your visitors and compares the results (an A/B test). This one needs the Grow plan or higher.
- Plan: Rollouts are on the Basic plan or higher.
- What can go in one: a change to your theme, a change to your checkout and customer accounts setup, your discounts, and your product catalogs.
- Discounts are new: since October 2, 2026 a discount can go in the same rollout as your theme changes.
How to schedule a sale
Get your discount and your sale theme ready first, then build the rollout.
Your discount: create it and set it up as usual. A rollout switches on a discount that already exists.
Check its Active dates while you're there! A discount inside a rollout keeps its own start and end dates, and they still count.
Your sale theme: make a copy of your theme, then add your sale banner and homepage changes to the copy. It shows up on your Themes page as "Copy Of" plus your theme's name.
Your time zone: rollouts run on your store's time zone, so check it.
Build the rollout
- In the Name section, give it a name (example: Spring Sale).
- In the rollout type menu, choose Event.
- In the Changes section, click Add changes.
- Choose Online store. Under Replace the current theme, select your sale theme. Click Apply.
- Click Add changes again and choose Discounts. Select your discount and set it to activated. Click Apply.
- In the Scheduling section, click Start date, choose the date and time your sale starts, and click Done.
- Click Set end date, choose the date and time it ends, and click Done. (An Event needs an end date.)
- If Shopify shows a conflict message, fix it before you save.
A rollout can hold one theme change and one checkout and accounts change, and up to 250 discounts. A discount can only be in one rollout at a time.
Then test it, test it, TEST IT before the real thing, so your biggest sale of the year isn't your first go! 👀
How to schedule a launch
For a new product that should appear at a set time, you don't need a rollout at all!
- Check the Product status section says Active. A product still in Draft at the scheduled time won't publish.
- Pick the date and time, then save.
- Need a new homepage or banner too? Build a rollout the same way as the sale above, choose Launch (your changes stay) or Event (they roll back on the end date), and set it to start at the same time as your product.
Your go-live checklist
Open your store on your phone in a private tab, and go through it like a customer.
- Set everything up ahead of time
- Test it before the real thing
- Be there when it switches on, and check everything
- Schedule it and walk away
- Forget the discount's own Active dates
- Make your biggest sale of the year your first go

When your sale ends
If something's wrong once it's live
Your store goes back to how it was. Your discount still has its own dates though, so open it in Discounts and check it's off too.
